Processing Time:

Routine: 4–6 weeks once the passport agency receives your application. Processing time does not include mailing (up to 2 weeks each way with standard mail).

Important: This is irreversible

Once submitted, your passport becomes invalid immediately. This action cannot be reversed.

  • If you find your old passport later, do not use it for travel. It will now be flagged as stolen in global databases.
  • Attempting to use a passport that's been reported as lost or stolen is a federal crime. Border agents worldwide have access to passport information.
  • If found, mail the old passport to be destroyed. Write "VOID" across the front cover and send it to the address on your DS-64 form.
